Overseas Partnership

In order to understand and support EWB’s overseas work, feel connected to it, and to continually learn about development, we have a partnership with an existing long-term overseas volunteer. For 2009, this volunteer is our very own Dan Olsen, who served as President for the Toronto Professional Chapter from 2007 to 2008.

Dan OlsenDan is working within the Ghanaian government to develop improved planning mechanisms for rural infrastructure projects. The Ghanaian government operates at three levels: federal; regional; and district. The Good Governance team in Ghana is working at the regional and district level to improve the flow of information from the field, to the districts, and ultimately to the regional coordination units. Understanding field realities will lead to better allocation and prioritization of infrastructure projects.

The overseas partnership is also connected to member learning, fundraising, and workplace outreach programs.  Here's how they collobrate with each other:

Member Learning: Education is the primary focus of the learning partnership which include communication with an overseas volunteer through presentations, workshops, and case studies.

Fundraising: Creating fundraising packages for companies interested in making financial donations to an overseas volunteer that the Toronto Professional Chapter is sponsoring.

Workplace Outreach:  Exchange updates on the activities of overseas volunteers to integrate into presentations / workshops for the workplace outreach program.International development

Since our partnership with an overseas volunteer is integrated into many chapter programs, the committee comprises a small group of chapter members that are integrated into the member learning, fundraising, and workplace outreach programs. This small committee will be knowledgeable on our overseas partner’s placement and act as a consultant for each chapter program.
